Top 10 Cybersecurity Tips |
| |
Here is a list
of the security standards being taught to students by "CyberSmart," a
school program in the US designed to teach students safe computer
practices.
Are you and your employees following these basic
standards? |

1 |
Protect Computers
with firewalls |
There are "corporate
firewalls" that protect an entire network.
There are single-user firewalls that protect a single computer.
Some single-user firewalls offer basic protection for free. The one
we use is ZoneAlarm -

someone you know, UNLESS you are sure the attachment is safe. |
|
4 |
Use hard-to-guess
passwords and keep them private |
Security experts suggest a
password of at least 8 characters that includes numbers and letters.
Never write your password down. |
|
5 |
Be a responsible
cyber-citizen |
Use your head for something
besides a hat rack.
If you are careless on the Internet and your computer becomes
infected, then your computer will flood all your friends with infected
emails.
Would you want a friend like that? |
|
6 |
Never share access
to your computer with strangers |
Computers contain
confidential information for your business and your life.
Why let a stranger have access to any of this? |
|
7 |
Disconnect from the
Internet when not in use |
Log off or disconnect the
cable when you are not on the Internet. |
|
8 |
Back up your
computer regularly |
Back-Up the data on your
computer at least once a week. |
|
9 |
Download security
protection update patches regularly |
Check for and download all
security patches for your software.
For Microsoft updates, in your browser, at the top, click on
"Tools," and choose "Windows Update" and follow the instructions. |
|
10 |
Evaluate computer
security at least twice a year |
Make it a special meeting,
or make the review part of your regularly scheduled business review
sessions, but stop and consider your computer security.
Consider what new threats and what new protection has become
available since you last reviewed security.
Act accordingly. |
