Training - What Do I Do?

How Do I Handle This Problem?

Step-By-Step Answers to Your Questions

-- I am shipping an automobile for a client. What information do I need?    What do I do?
AUTOS WHICH MAY BE INSURED:
Our coverage for Motor Vehicles are some of the broadest available.
For example, we offer coverage for vehicles more than five (5) years old automatically through the system, where many do not.
Effective 17 March 2007 all "Classic Cars" - all autos more than twelve (12) years old may be insured ONLY with specific approval of Underwriters each and every time.

PRE-SHIPMENT SURVEY REPORT:

The first thing you want when you move any motor vehicle is a complete, careful and comprehensive survey of the condition of the vehicle at the moment the vehicle is turned over to you as the "Shipping Company."
You could be legally liable for any damage to the vehicle so be careful to note every scratch, dent, ding, etc. that is on the vehicle when you take possession of it for transport.
Have the Shipper sign and agree to your description of the vehicle's condition in the Pre-Shipment Report.
SUGGESTION: It is not required, but IF your pre-shipment survey notes, for example, minor damage to the right front fender, take a picture of the damage. That way, if, upon delivery, the fender is seriously damaged, you can show the Surveyor and Claims office that much more damage was done during transit. Do this for all scratches, dents or damage.

INSURANCE PAPERWORK:

If you are offering cargo insurance to the Shipper, then we strongly advise that you also give the Shipper a complete copy of the insuring contract which would include:

  • Copy of the Pre-Shipment Survey

  • Copy of the Certificate of Insurance

  • Copy of the Insuring Contract made up of:

    • Standard Conditions

    • Special Motor Vehicle Conditions

    • ICC Clauses A

    • ICC Clauses Strikes

    • ICC Clauses War

The Shipper may never read the clauses and exclusions in the insuring contract, but if you always give all Shippers this information, then in case of claim the Shipper could never say "they were not informed."

PROPER PACKING & STOWAGE:
The Container Handbook has excellent descriptions of proper and improper stowage of automobiles in containers.

REMIND YOUR SHIPPER
  • If the Motor Vehicle is more than five years old, there are extra EXCLUSIONS and LIMITS to cover without prior approval of Underwriters as noted in the Motor Vehicle Special Conditions of the Terms & Conditions.

  • Vehicles more than twelve (12) years old may be insured ONLY with specific approval of Underwriters each and every time.

  • If a part is damaged in transit on a used motor vehicle, Claims Office may offer only to pay for replacement with a used part, not a new one.
